after midnight sunday. according to michael's mother michelle who i spoke to by phone the men were being driven home the driver got lost she says they asked to be let out and soon after they were jumped by a gang of men. michelle says her son and his partner were severely beaten, michael hall took the brunt of the blows to his face, michelle says during the beating a woman and her boyfriend came upon the scene stopping the attack, the suspects got away with a cell phone michael hall was taken to hospital where he under went surgery this afternoon hall is a well known local yoga instructor his friends and students have set up a facebook page and are also holding a fundraiser to help cover hospital costs friends say hall recently lost his apartment in a fire and has no health insurance. ryan. >> maureen ume tonight. the nation now knows the face of the man suspected of the deadly movie theatre shooting in colorado. the gunman, 24-year-old james holmes made his first appearance before a colorado judge he was wide eyed, seemed

out of it in a maroon prison jump suit with hair dyed a bright reddish orange. holmes was recordrd to stay -- ordered to stay behind bars in solitary confinement. he is expected to be formerly charged on multiple counts of first degree murder next monday. fox news correspondent, greg boswell joins us live from aurora colorado with the latest craig. >> reporter: good evening most of the talk is generated by the demeanour, appearance of james holmes the suspected gunman in this case not just the orange reddish hair but also, his stare. i describe it as a blank stare other people call it dazed and confused looking like maybe he was going to sleep many family members inside we talked to afterwards felt like maybe he was acting a little bit. acting they were saying because he wants to avoid the death penalty down the line. the prosecutor in this case,

problem. >> support for tougher gun laws dropped over the years a recent gallup poll found in 1990, 78% of americans said firearm laws should be tougher by 2010 they would fall into 34%. penn state smacked with unprecedented sanctions from the ncaa in the wake of a child sex abuse scandal the announcement came today from the head of the association, $60 million fine, no post season play for four years loss of 10 annual scholarships for four years, five years probation and ncaa vacated everyone of the team's wins from 1998 to 2011 but ncaa did not shut down the program. >> suspension of the football program, would bring with it significant unintended harm to many who had nothing to do with the case. the sanctions we have crafted are more focused and impactful than that blanket penalty. >> $60 million fine is significant because it is what the football program brings into the school every year.

african american university and two directors are here now the talk about that study. we will start with you what were the initial i guess, is it the over arching finding of the study that really you think is sort of worthy of doing the study in the first place. >> first of all thank you for having us today. we are one of six cityeight sites that participated in national institutes of health, hiv prevention study we looked at a cohort of 1500 black men who have sex with men. we were able to identify the number of new infections that happened in this cohort for the first time. this is a landmark study. >> chauncey when you looked at the research coming outs of this report did anything kind of make you take a step back and say wow this is interesting. >> absolutely the numbers we began to find within the study really highlighted that we are really faced with an epidemic here. mostly amongst our young men

who have sex with men of color p. it really just highlights the need for innovative new tools to really do research around these individuals. >> indc rates are high are there any solutions that came out of the study. >> i think we have really been collaborating to understand since this is the first, as you said landmark study as we move forward how can we look at structural interventions combine biomedical with truvada to highlight this issue. >> did you find a cultural stigma, perhaps attached with men of color having sex with men of color not using condoms in what is the over arching problem here. >> first of all it is what we identified in the study we take innovative community based culturally appropriate methods to address this epidemic in young men these methods we don't just have one tool we have many available we can look

at structural, community based interventions and types of looking for access increasing access and improving access to health care, sexually trance mated, treatment to testing and -- transmitted treatment to testing and a tool kit culturally appropriate for each person and community. it is really looking forward into what we can do next not just backwards but looking forward. >> is there a way, mania speaks at a higher level than a lot of us -- how do you break the culture how do you get into a monogamous or nonmonogamous relationship and say these are the things you need to do. >> absolutely as the face of the epidemic is changing so should our research, sort of how we become innovative with our research methods. as she was so earl cantily saying, -- eloquently saying, we move forward and change and

channel and look at the innocent as the whole the person. >> is that in advertising? >> becoming innovative we have text messaging, twitter, facebook all the social media, social networking sites we have to utilize our entire tool box to address this issue. >> can you use the scare tactics tobacco industry is facing with the government making them put really graphic pictures on cigarette boxes and while you know, it is not the most pleasant thing to look at it seems to be working. >> right we have to go back to the fundamentals so now that we have a tool box we have some ideas of what could work for different populations we just need to examine the individual, and give them what best works for them >> all right. >> last word. >> just i think just under scores we have an urgent public health situation and we along with our colleagues across the country and people here at the conference are trying to turn the tide that is the theme of the conference turning the tide and these data provide an amazing insight how to turn the tide and improve especially
